A crowd of men surrounds a woman thrown to the ground, her hair loose in the dust, and every one of them grips a stone. One man parts the circle, stops in front of her and draws himself up facing the others, without a word. Arms lower one after another, and the stones fall to the ground, one by one.

The man is Jesus. The woman is Mary Magdalene, and in Martin Scorsese's film The Last Temptation of Christ, she is a prostitute.

In movies as in museums, she is almost always given that past: a prostitute whom Jesus forgave. Novels go further still and make her Jesus' wife.

So was Mary Magdalene a former prostitute?

Her story, as churches have told it for centuries, begins with a dinner.

Simon's Table

The scene comes from Luke, one of the four men who wrote the Gospels, the accounts of Jesus' life. At the time, Jesus is traveling through Galilee, and a Pharisee has him to dinner. The Pharisees are a group of devout men who follow the Law of Moses down to its smallest details, and the Pharisee hosting Jesus is named Simon.

In the room, the guests eat the way people ate then, reclining on couches around the table, weight on one elbow, feet pointing outward. Jesus reclines among them. Dishes pass from hand to hand, and people talk.

A woman comes in, uninvited, and Luke introduces her in a few words: a woman from the town, a sinner. He says no more. Around the table, everyone can guess how she earns her living; voices drop, and heads turn toward her, then look away.

She clutches an alabaster jar to her chest, a vessel of polished white stone filled with perfume. She slips behind Jesus, stops at his feet and weeps, and her tears fall on them. She lets down her hair and dries his feet with it, then presses her lips to the feet she has just dried and pours her perfume over them.

Simon says nothing as he watches her, and he thinks: if this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him, and what kind of woman she is, a sinner.

Jesus turns to him. "Simon, I have something to say to you."

"Tell me, teacher," Simon says.

A moneylender has two debtors, Jesus says. One owes him five hundred silver coins, the other fifty; neither can pay, and the lender cancels both debts. Which of the two will love him more?

"The one who was forgiven more, I suppose," Simon answers.

"You have judged correctly," says Jesus.

Then Jesus points the woman out to his host. "Do you see this woman?" When Jesus came into the house, Simon gave him no water for his feet; she washed them with her tears and dried them with her hair.

Simon gave him no kiss; she has not stopped kissing his feet since he came in. Simon poured no oil on Jesus' head; she poured perfume on his feet. And Jesus concludes: her many sins are forgiven, because she has loved so much.

Then he turns to the woman. "Your sins are forgiven." Around the table, the guests lean toward one another: Who is this man, who even forgives sins?

Jesus does not answer them. "Your faith has saved you; go in peace." She rises and leaves the room, and the jar sits there at the foot of the couch, empty.

Remember that jar of perfume.

Against the Dark

You have surely seen her before: the woman with unbound hair and a jar of perfume. Five centuries ago, in Venice, a duke commissions a Mary Magdalene from Titian, one of the greatest painters of the Renaissance. He wants to give it to a deeply pious woman poet.

Titian paints her alone against a dark background, and he paints her nude. Her long golden hair falls over her shoulders and chest, concealing nothing. Her eyes, full of tears, lift toward heaven, and beside her rests the jar of perfume from the dinner. He gives her the body of a classical Venus, the goddess of love.

Other painters had undressed her before him, but Europe remembers his Magdalene, and centuries later artists are still copying it. The painters who come after him waver between two Magdalenes, the weeping penitent and the desirable woman caught mid-repentance, and almost all their canvases tell the same story: a woman who sinned with her body and asks forgiveness for it.

The same signs identify her in churches and museums alike, and all of them come from the dinner: the unbound hair, the tears, the jar of perfume.

In English, her name even became an ordinary word more than three centuries ago. A magdalen is a repentant prostitute. And the same name gave us maudlin, meaning tearful, because she was painted in tears.

The paintings, the tears, the jar, the word all rest on a single scene: the dinner at Simon's.

Yet go back to the text itself, and the woman who wept and poured perfume at that dinner has no name.

Mary Magdalene's name does not appear until the next chapter.

Misenum, on the Bay of Naples, August 24, AD 79.

Tablets open, stylus raised, a secretary trots behind a 55 year old man. Without slowing, the man dictates a note on harbor traffic as he walks.

His name is Pliny. He commands Rome's battle fleet, moored below.

A cold bath, a light meal taken half reclining, a reader at his side turning page after page. Pliny hates to lose an hour. Then he stretches out in full sun, a book unrolled on his chest, before going back in to read in the shade.

His nephew, Caecilius, 17, also lives in the house, with his mother, Pliny's sister. The uncle has given him an assignment: read Livy, the historian who told the whole story of Rome from its founding, and copy out extracts.

Over the boy's shoulder, Pliny reads, strikes out a line with the flat of the stylus, points to another higher up the scroll, and waits until it is copied before moving on.

For several days now, the earth has been trembling off and on. No one worries: in Campania, tremors come and go with the seasons.

Midmorning, a slightly stronger tremor sets the dishes ringing on the sideboards. Conversations pick up where they left off.

Around one in the afternoon, his sister hurries through the house, calls him from the doorway and pulls him from his reading: she has never seen anything like it in the sky, he must come and see.

Caecilius drops his scroll and follows. All three step outside and look up.

Above a mountain across the bay, about 18 miles away, a column of smoke is climbing into the sky, a straight, immense trunk that rises and then spreads into branches, like a pine.

At times the column is white, at times dirty and mottled, depending on how much earth and ash it is tearing up. No sound crosses the bay. It climbs in silence.

Pliny calls for his sandals, climbs to the best vantage point in the house, and looks for a long time without a word.

Then he comes down and gives his orders: ready a light ship, a fast one, just to make the crossing. He offers to take Caecilius along to see.

The boy declines. His extracts are not finished. The uncle does not insist and goes down toward the harbor, the secretary at his heels.

Rectina's Note

Pliny is at the bottom of the steps when the bay trembles again, a shock harder than any before it, running from one end of the coast to the other.

Tiles slide from roofs. Inside the houses, people steady the amphorae against the walls.

On the harbor road, a messenger arrives, out of breath, a note in his hand. He holds it out.

The note is signed Rectina, wife of a man named Tascius, and comes from a villa at the foot of the smoking mountain.

From there, no road leads out anymore; the only escape is by sea. Rectina begs someone to come for her.

The messenger stays bent double, hands on his knees.

Pliny folds the note and sends the light ship away. His orders turn the whole harbor upside down: the quadriremes, his warships, are launched one after another.

He boards the first one himself, the secretary behind him, tablets clutched to his chest. On this coast, the villas nearly touch. Rectina is not the only one the sea can still save.

Straight at the column, the ships push on against a tide of fleeing sails. Everything afloat on the bay is running south or out to open water. Only the quadriremes head up toward the mountain.

Then the ash arrives. Warm at first, then hot, thicker with every stretch of sea, it falls on the deck. The rowers take it on the back of their necks.

Pumice stones follow, bouncing off the benches, then black stones, split and scorched by fire.

At last the sea itself gives way: the water turns shallow all at once, the surface covered with floating pumice and debris fallen from the mountain. The hull scrapes bottom.

Ahead, the shore is walling itself off with rubble.

At Misenum, Caecilius looks up from his scroll. The column is taller than when the ships left, and darker. Somewhere on the water beneath the smoke, his uncle is sailing toward it.

Uneasy, the boy goes back to his line.

On deck, the helmsman turns to Pliny. Where Rectina lives, he says, the sea and the wind make landing impossible. They must try another point on the coast, or turn back.

Pliny is silent for a moment, his eyes on the rubble closing off the shore, the ash falling between the two of them. The helmsman waits, hand on the tiller, facing the open sea.

One last time, Pliny looks at the barred shore, then at the helmsman.

"Fortune favors the bold. Make for the villa of my friend Pomponianus."

More than 5,000 years ago, in the Mesopotamian city of Uruk, in what is now Iraq, a scribe holds a tablet of still-soft clay in his palm.

He is in the back of a temple storeroom, among sacks of barley and jars of beer, and the tip of his reed stylus presses signs into the clay. An ear of grain. The head of an ox. Round impressions, for counting.

Writing is brand new, and it keeps the temple's books.

On a few of the tablets, one name keeps turning up: Inanna, lady of the city, goddess of love and war, whose festivals call for offerings. The Sumerians, who invented these signs, pray to dozens of gods. The sky has a god, and so do the moon and fresh water. Even beer has a goddess of its own.

Elsewhere, and later, the heavens are just as crowded. In Greece, Zeus rules over a whole family of jealous gods on Olympus, and in Mexico the Aztec sun rises each morning only if the Aztecs have fed it blood.

For thousands of years, polytheism, the belief in many gods, rules the entire world. Monotheism, the conviction that only one god exists, is a latecomer to human history.

Today, more than 4 billion people call themselves followers of a single God. So who invented the one God?

Gods of Clay

A thousand years pass over the tablets of Uruk. The cities of Sumer now answer to a single king, and his capital is Ur: mud brick, canals, a harbor on the Euphrates, not far from the Persian Gulf.

A stepped tower more than 65 feet high rises over the rooftops, with the shrine of the moon god, the city's protector, at the top. Down below, in the houses, the gods are closer at hand: small clay figurines tucked into wall niches, where families set out food for them.

In one of these houses lives a man named Abram, with his father and his wife. She has borne him no children.

One day the father leads his son, his daughter-in-law and the flocks out of Ur and some 600 miles northwest, upriver, to Harran, near the present-day border between Turkey and Syria. There, too, people pray to the moon god.

In Harran, a voice speaks to Abram. It comes from no statue, no niche, no temple, but from a God unlike any of his father's gods.

"Go from your country, your kindred and your father's house, to the land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation."

Abram is 75 years old. He gathers his servants, his wife and his flocks, turns his back on his father's house and the gods who live in it, and heads southwest without knowing where the road leads.

It leads to Canaan, a strip of land wedged between the sea and the desert, roughly where Lebanon, Israel and Palestine lie today. Near a great oak, God comes to him again.

"To your offspring I will give this land."

Abram lives in a tent, and wherever his flocks stop, he piles stones into an altar for this faceless God.

A Raised Knife

Years pass in tents and pastures, and still no child by his wife. At last Abram complains to his God.

One night, God draws him out of the tent.

"Look toward heaven, and count the stars, if you are able to count them. So shall your offspring be."

Abram believes him.

When Abram is 99, God proposes a covenant: he will remain the God of Abram and his descendants forever, and Abram will be faithful to him in all things. Then God gives him a new name.

"No longer shall your name be Abram, but your name shall be Abraham, for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations."

Abram means "exalted father." Abraham means "father of a multitude."

And the pact is cut into the flesh.

"Every male among you shall be circumcised. It shall be a sign of the covenant between me and you."

Abraham is circumcised that very day, along with every man in his household, and a year later his wife gives birth to a son, Isaac. She is 90.

Isaac grows up. God tests Abraham.

"Take your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac."

The whole promised line must pass through this son, and God wants Abraham to lead him up a mountain and sacrifice him like a lamb. Abraham does not argue. Early in the morning he saddles his donkey and sets out with Isaac.

Three days' walk. When he sees the mountain, Abraham lays the firewood on Isaac's shoulders, takes the fire and the knife himself, and they climb together.

"Here is the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb?"

"God will provide, my son."

At the top, Abraham builds the altar, arranges the wood, binds his son and lays him on it, and raises the knife.

An angel cries out Abraham's name from heaven. The hand stops.

"Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me."

Abraham looks up. A ram is caught by its horns in a thicket, and it is the ram that goes on the altar. Because Abraham obeyed, God does more than promise. He swears by himself to give Abraham descendants as numerous as the stars and as the sand on the seashore, and through them a blessing for every nation on earth.

Today, Jews honor Abraham as the father of their people, Christians as the father of all who believe, Muslims as the friend of God. Three religions, and one image of him: the man who left his father's gods for a single God.

The Silent Ground

The oldest text to tell this story is Genesis, the book that opens the Bible. Outside that book, the ground has yielded nothing that mentions Abraham: no inscription, no object from his time.

And these pages were not written in his lifetime. More than 1,000 years separate the era in which they place Abraham from the time they were written.

They show a man who serves one God and obeys him in everything. But serving one god is not the same as denying the others. A man can leave his father's gods behind and still believe they are real, back there, next door, in the house he walked out of.

Monotheism is the conviction that no other god exists. Abraham never voices it. In Genesis, his God speaks, promises, puts him to the test, and nowhere does Abraham say that other people's gods are nothing.

But long before the Bible was written, another man did say it: there is only one god.

He lived in a land next door to Canaan.

And he imposed that one god on his entire country.

Everyone knows Cleopatra. Queen of Egypt, the greatest beauty of the ancient world, the woman who brought down Julius Caesar and then Mark Antony with nothing but her face.

Two thousand years later, we still picture her as Elizabeth Taylor. Smoky eyes, black bangs, gold at the wrists.

None of it is true.

That face was manufactured after her death, by a man who needed her to be beautiful so he could destroy her.

The story starts three centuries earlier, and not in Egypt.

The Stolen Body

Fall of 332 BC. A 24-year-old boy crosses into Egypt at the head of an army, and not a single arrow is fired.

His name is Alexander. King of Macedon, a mountain kingdom north of Greece, he left home two years earlier to tear the largest empire in the known world away from the Persians. The Persians have occupied Egypt for eleven years, and the Egyptians hate them for it. The gates open for him.

He stays six months.

Long enough to be crowned pharaoh, to travel five days by camel across the desert to have his fortune told by an oracle, and to drive stakes into a strip of sand wedged between the sea and a lake, west of the Nile delta. The city doesn't exist yet. He gives it his name.

Then he heads east again. In June of 323 BC, in Babylon, a fever kills him at 32, with no heir fit to rule.

His generals carve up the empire the following month. Macedonians, childhood friends, former bodyguards. Each man takes his share.

One of them claims Egypt. Ptolemy, in his forties, raised alongside Alexander, at his side on every battlefield since day one.

Two years pass before the body leaves Babylon. A funeral carriage pulled by sixty-four mules carries it toward Macedon, where kings are buried.

Ptolemy intercepts it in Syria with his troops and diverts the convoy to Egypt.

An army is sent to take it back. It never makes it across the Nile.

Alexander's body comes to rest in a mausoleum in the center of Alexandria. People file past it for centuries.

Ptolemy has himself crowned king. A Greek officer, in a country that isn't his, with the corpse of the greatest conqueror in the world resting in his capital.

A Greek Family

Ptolemy's kingdom will last nearly three centuries without ever ceasing to be Greek.

In Alexandria, the court speaks Greek, the administration writes in Greek, legal rulings come down in Greek. The city builds a theater, a gymnasium, a library where scribes churn out copies of Homer, and a lighthouse over three hundred feet tall that the ancient world counts among the Seven Wonders.

Egyptians have no place in any of it. They work the land along the Nile and pay their taxes.

The Ptolemies rule over them without mixing with them. To keep the bloodline intact, they marry their sisters, then their nieces, generation after generation. The coins tell the story of these marriages: the same profile turns up portrait after portrait.

They hold the title of pharaoh. They have themselves carved into temple walls in Egyptian dress, the double crown on their heads. A uniform for the job. Not one of them learns the language of the country.

Cleopatra is born in Alexandria in 69 BC, tenth generation. Her father is named Ptolemy, like every man before him. Her native language is Greek.

History didn't even record her mother's name. Or her paternal grandmother's. Half of her ancestry is missing from the record, and the other half, the half we can trace name by name, is Macedonian, start to finish.

The Language of the Land

Cleopatra takes the throne at 18, in 51 BC.

And she learns Egyptian.

Nine generations of Greek kings settled along the Nile, and not one of them had ever spoken the language of the land they ruled.

Egyptian isn't the only language she learns. From one audience to the next, she slides from Ethiopian to Hebrew, from Arabic to Parthian, never once calling for an interpreter.

She also has herself depicted as an Egyptian.

Roughly three hundred miles south of Alexandria, on a wall of the temple at Dendera, she has herself carved into stone in Egyptian dress, in the style Nile sculptors have practiced for two thousand years. Beside her, the son she had with Julius Caesar.

In the papyri, she signs herself the New Isis, after the country's greatest goddess.

A Greek queen learning to pass herself off as Egyptian. It's a political calculation, and it works. Egypt embraces her as it never embraced a single Ptolemy before her.

The Face on the Silver

In the spring of 36 BC, Cleopatra is 33 years old and some six hundred miles from Alexandria. Antioch, a city in Syria set on a river, the Orontes, with a mountain at its back.

Mark Antony, a Roman general, is headquartered there. A division of power among Rome's strongmen gave him the East, and for four years now he has governed everything stretching from Greece to the Euphrates.

She has spent the winter at his side. They already have two children, twins born four years earlier.

That year, the city's mint strikes a silver coin bearing both their faces. Mark Antony on one side. She on the other, the same size.

Rome doesn't put foreign rulers on its silver. And yet, around Cleopatra's head, in Greek letters, her full name and title: Queen Cleopatra, the Young Goddess.

Her profile is what catches the eye.

The nose, long and sharply hooked, runs straight down from the forehead in a single line. The chin juts forward. The jaw cuts across the lower face. The neck is thick, the forehead low.

It's the Ptolemy nose. The one that belonged to her father, her grandfather, every king in the family for the past two hundred and seventy years.

A coin is the only object that shows a ruler to people who will never lay eyes on him. It passes from hand to hand, city to city, for years. No coin goes into production until the king has seen it.

Cleopatra approved this profile, then let it travel across the entire East.

A king who commissions his own portrait commissions one that flatters him. Engravers know how to soften a nose, pull back a chin, narrow a jaw.

Nobody touched hers.

Cleopatra's beauty was never something Cleopatra chose.

"The most beautiful woman of the ancient world" was shaped by a man who wished her nothing but harm.

Newfoundland, Canada, 1960.

On the shore of a bay in the north of the island, a man walking through the grass stops short. The ground swells into mounds too regular to be natural. He digs.

Under the turf: the walls of houses, a forge, a bronze pin. Radiocarbon dating settles it. Vikings lived here. Europeans set foot in the Americas nearly five centuries before Christopher Columbus.

After them, nothing. The memory of their crossing survives in a handful of tales from Northern Europe, then fades. These men had crossed the ocean in open boats. The kingdoms of Europe, with fleets many times larger, wait centuries before they try the same voyage.

Why the long wait? And then why, all at once, the rush toward the Atlantic? The usual answer is wrong. The story starts on a dock in Genoa.

The Edge of the Parchment

Genoa, 1474. Along the docks, porters roll barrels up the gangways and haul coils of rope and bales of wool aboard, everything bound for the East. Off to one side, a young sailor of about twenty sits waiting his turn to board.

A sea chart lies open on his knees, a parchment worn at the folds. The coastlines run in one unbroken line, with the names of the ports lettered along them. He is a weaver's son, and he has sailed for the merchants of Genoa since he was a boy. He puts his finger on his hometown, and the finger starts to move.

First it traces what the sailor knows by heart: the Mediterranean from shore to shore, Greece and its islands, the strait that opens onto the Black Sea, then down again to the coast of Egypt. Genoa and Venice have traded along these shores for centuries. The finger follows them without a pause.

Then the line stops. Asia begins at the edge of the parchment: India, China, lands Europe knows only through the goods that reach its docks and through the book of Marco Polo, a Venetian merchant who came home from China nearly two centuries earlier. Scholars copy the maps of Ptolemy, a Greek geographer of antiquity, and on those maps the Indian Ocean is an enclosed sea, with no way around Africa.

The finger moves down the coast of Africa. Past Morocco, the coastline plunges south and trails off. To the west, the ocean and the Canary Islands, then blank space to the margin. Two continents wait on that side, North America and South America. Beyond them: another ocean, the Pacific, then Australia, then the ice of the South Pole. No map in Europe shows even a hint of any of these coastlines.

So the finger swings back east, past the last drawn coastline and off the parchment altogether, into the white space where no sea chart goes. At the far end of Asia lies Cipango, Japan, Marco Polo's island, the one whose king lives in a palace covered in pure gold. The sailor has dreamed of it since childhood. His finger rests there, in the void, for a long time.

An order rings out from the deck of the ship bound for Chios. The folded chart disappears under his shirt, and the sailor climbs aboard. His name is Christopher Columbus.

Two Pounds a Day

Chios, in the Aegean, has belonged to Genoa for more than a century, and the ship sails due east toward it with young Columbus among the crew. The Genoese come to buy mastic, a resin found nowhere else on earth. But their fortune, like Venice's, is made much farther away, on what Asia sends and all of Europe fights over: pepper from India, cinnamon, silk from China, and nutmeg and cloves, which grow only on a handful of islands in what is now Indonesia.

The rich scent their dishes with these spices, doctors mix them into remedies, and a well-spiced table announces rank. The household of a single great English lord goes through about two pounds of spice a day.

All of it comes from far away, by two roads. A sack of pepper leaves India on an Indian or Arab ship, crosses the Indian Ocean, and sails up the Red Sea. It crosses Egypt, ruled by the Mamluk sultans, floats down the Nile, and at Alexandria the Venetian galleys are waiting at the dock.

Silk goes overland. Caravans set out from China and cross the whole of Asia to the Black Sea, where Genoa keeps its trading posts, and from there everything travels down to Constantinople, the city that controls the passage from the Black Sea into the Mediterranean.

At every stop along the way, a merchant buys, sells, and keeps his cut. By the time the pepper finally reaches the docks of Venice or Genoa, it sells for several times what it cost at the start.

The Coast Across the Water

The voyage ends at Chios. Columbus stands on deck. A few miles away, across a strip of sea, lies the far shore: Anatolia, in what is now Turkey. It is Ottoman. To keep their island, the Genoese of Chios pay the Ottoman sultan a yearly tribute. In a single generation, much of the coastline the sailor's finger traced back in Genoa has changed hands.

A century and a half earlier, the Ottomans held only a small Turkish and Muslim principality in the northwest of Anatolia. Within a century they had crossed into Europe, conquered the Balkans, and surrounded Constantinople. For more than 1,000 years, that city had been the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire, for much of that time the largest city in Christendom, and everything moving from the Black Sea toward the Mediterranean had to pass beneath its walls. In 1453, Mehmed II, a 21-year-old sultan, took it and made it his capital.

Since then, the Ottomans have advanced island by island and port by port, and Genoa's trading posts on the Black Sea are under threat. The young Genoese dreams of Marco Polo's Asia, but the eastern road to Cipango now runs through the sultan's lands. In Genoa, merchants, sailors, and bankers begin to look west, toward Portugal and its ports, and toward Castile, the great kingdom in the center of Spain.

This is where the story in the textbooks comes from. Constantinople falls, and with it the spice route closes. Goods from Asia now pay the Ottomans a toll, prices soar, and Europe, cut off from Asia, has nowhere left to look for a new route but the Atlantic.

The Price of Pepper in Venice

This story has a problem, and the problem is a date. When Constantinople falls, the Portuguese have already been out on the Atlantic for 38 years.

And what passed through Constantinople was mostly goods from the Black Sea region: wheat, salt fish, furs, slaves, plus the silk that came overland. That road had been declining for a century already. The Black Death had traveled it end to end, and the caravans had lost the protection of the Mongol Empire, which had splintered into rival kingdoms.

Spices almost never come that way. Their route runs up the Red Sea and across Egypt, Mamluk land, not Ottoman. And once Constantinople has fallen, the Venetian galleys keep loading them at Alexandria, exactly as before.

As for their price, it does not soar. Over the course of the century, on the Venetian market, pepper slides, losing more than a third of its value.

So it was not the fall of Constantinople that pushed Europeans toward the Atlantic.

Imagine a single building that holds everything anyone has ever written down.

It has the charts of every coastline, the remedies of every doctor, the plays still staged today and the ones nobody remembers. Every line ever written is on a shelf somewhere inside.

Even today, with all our computers and all our AI, nobody can pull that much together in one place.

Yet this place once existed. It was called the Library of Alexandria.

Legend has it that the library held all the knowledge of the ancient world, and that losing it set humanity back a thousand years.

Legend says it vanished. What actually happened to it looks almost nothing like the story everyone tells.

The Palace Windows

Alexander the Great rules a small kingdom on the northern edge of Greece when he sets out to conquer half the known world. He dies in 323 BC, young, far from home, without naming an heir.

His empire does not outlive him by a single season. His generals carve up what he conquered, then turn on one another.

One of them is Ptolemy, a boyhood friend of Alexander's who has fought beside him ever since. He takes Egypt for himself, the richest share of all.

On the coast he founds a new city, names it Alexandria after the dead man, and sets out to make it the most brilliant city in the Greek world, one that outshines every other capital combined.

To pull that off, he launches a project of almost absurd ambition: collect everything ever written, anywhere on earth, in one place.

He builds the library right inside the royal palace, just above the docks. From its windows you can see the masts of ships coming into the harbor, and watch the sails come down as they tie up.

Directly below, every one of those ships is boarded and searched. The king's men climb aboard, open the chests, and unroll whatever they find.

Every book that turns up is confiscated and copied. The original stays in the library. The copy sails away with the crew.

Within a few generations, this palace of books is the greatest center of learning the ancient world has ever seen, and scholars from all over the Mediterranean work there, fed and housed at the king's expense.

The Harbor District

Time passes, and Alexandria becomes exactly what Ptolemy wanted: the most brilliant capital in the Greek world.

Rome, meanwhile, is tearing itself apart in a civil war, and one of its generals, Julius Caesar, chases his rival all the way to Egypt.

He lands in Alexandria and walks straight into somebody else's war. Two heirs are fighting over the Egyptian throne, brother against sister.

Caesar picks a side, and just like that he is trapped in the harbor district.

His ships are moored side by side along the docks, his soldiers dug in behind the warehouses. In the streets facing his men, an army far larger than his own is waiting.

His fleet is within the enemy's reach. Rather than hand it over, Caesar sets fire to it himself.

Torches land on the decks. The flames catch on the hulls, run up the rigging, climb the masts.

The wind is blowing in off the sea. It drives the fire onto the docks, and from the docks into the warehouses that line the harbor. Their roofs cave in one after another.

By daybreak, the harbor and everything around it is ash.

On the Dock

Decades go by. Alexandria gets back on its feet, richer and more crowded than before the fire, and merchant ships are once again coming and going in its harbor.

One morning, among the bales and the travelers coming ashore, there is a man. Strabo.

Strabo is a geographer, already respected across the Greek world for the accounts he brings back from his travels in Italy, Greece, and Asia Minor. He is here, as always, to write down what he sees.

He leaves the harbor, his legs still heavy from the crossing, and heads into the city. Porters are unloading amphorae on the docks, and merchants are calling out to passersby in several languages at once.

Strabo does not have to ask directions. He has walked these streets once before, and he knows them.

He picks up his pace, then stops short.

The Library of Alexandria is still there.

Menlo Park, New Jersey, September 1878.

A train pulls into the small station, fields stretching out on every side. A dozen or so reporters step off, dispatched by New York's biggest papers.

At the end of a dirt road stands a long wooden building, two stories tall. The man waiting on the doorstep is 31, his hair already gray, his sleeves rolled up. Thomas Edison, famous across America for the past year thanks to the phonograph.

He leads the visitors up to the workshop on the second floor, a long room cluttered with workbenches, coils of copper wire, and glass jars.

Then he picks up a bulb off the bench, a glass globe the size of a fist. He makes it glow in front of them, lifting it for a moment the way a jeweler holds up a stone.

"This light will last forever."

Dozens of inventors have been chasing this same light for years. Every one of their lamps dies within minutes.

Edison announces that he has solved electric lighting. The reporters' pencils race across their notepads.

That evening, everyone boards the train home.

The workshop falls silent again.

On the bench, the bulb burns out. A few minutes of light, like all the others before it.

Edison has not solved electric lighting. He has just lied to the entire press corps.

The next day, the New York Sun prints his line in bold type: "I have it now."

Within days, gas company stocks plunge on the New York Stock Exchange. A month later, J.P. Morgan and the Vanderbilts finance the creation of the Edison Electric Light Company.

None of them has ever seen the lamp.

It does not exist yet.

The Cotton Thread

The lamp won't exist for another thirteen months. And Edison won't be the one who builds it.

On the night of October 21, 1879, one man is still bent over a workbench, alone in the sleeping laboratory. Charles Batchelor, 33, an English mechanic, Edison's closest assistant. Around him, boxes full of failed attempts.

He seals a charred cotton thread inside a bulb drained of air. He switches it on.

The light holds for an hour. Then two.

Batchelor crosses the building to wake Edison. The two men spend the rest of the night sitting in front of the bulb. By morning, it hasn't gone out.

That same morning, in a nearby room, a clerk sits down to draft the patent application. Edison stands by the window.

"Whose name goes on the patent?"

Edison doesn't turn around.

"Mine."

Batchelor's name is nowhere on it. Nobody else's from the laboratory ever is, either. That is the house rule: the hands belong to everyone, the name belongs to him.

One problem remains, and Edison knows it. Back in 1874, two Canadians from Toronto, Henry Woodward and Mathew Evans, had patented a lamp built on the same principle. A carbon filament inside a glass globe.

Their patent predates his by five years. In court, it could bring the whole thing down.

Woodward and Evans had never found the money to develop their lamp. By the time the man Edison sent shows up in Toronto, in a room that serves as both office and workshop, the two men are in debt and out of options.

He sets a check for $5,000 on the table. The amount is no accident: just enough to cover their debts, not a dollar more. Edison had set the figure himself.

Woodward reads the check twice. Evans watches the snow through the window. Both men sign.

The patent changes hands, and the title along with it. In the eyes of the law, Edison is now the sole inventor of the incandescent lamp.

Years later, Evans will sum up the sale in one line: "The inventor never gets the reward of his labour."

The pattern is set, and it will hold for a lifetime. Other men search, invent, and go broke. Edison signs.

Much later, when a Washington inventor named Thomas Armat sells him his film projector, the contract will require the machine to be sold as an Edison invention. On the 1896 posters: Edison's Vitascope. Armat's name appears nowhere.

Pearl Street

The lamp, at least, finally delivers on its promise. On September 4, 1882, in New York's financial district, Edison himself throws the switch at the power station he built at the bottom of Pearl Street. Behind him, six giant dynamos, each as heavy as a locomotive. The floor shakes under his boots.

Dozens of buildings light up at once. The New York Times prints the next day's edition under its own new lamps.

For five years, everything goes his way. Cities order his system one after another. Every power station carries his name. The laboratory moves to West Orange, ten times the size.

Then the sales reports start piling up on his desk.

George Westinghouse, 41, a Pittsburgh industrialist and the inventor of the railroad air brake, sells a rival system. Alternating current, patented by a young engineer newly arrived from Europe, Nikola Tesla. Westinghouse has bought the rights from him.

The difference between the two systems comes down to one line. Edison's direct current loses power after about a mile and a quarter of cable. That means a power station in every neighborhood.

Westinghouse's current travels much farther. Where Edison builds ten power stations, Westinghouse builds one.

Edison compares the costs, city by city. He loses everywhere. Buffalo has signed with Westinghouse, and more cities follow every month.

He reads the column of numbers again, then slowly pushes the papers away. He sits still for a moment, hands flat on the desk.

An ordinary industrialist would have cut his prices, or switched currents.

Edison looks up at the assistant who has stayed in the room.

"Find everything there is on how New York State executes condemned men."

The Sunday Call

FBI headquarters, Washington, a Sunday morning in January 1995.

A hallway of closed doors, and a single lamp burning at the far end, in the counterterrorism section. The air smells of reheated coffee.

John O’Neill sits down behind a desk that became his this morning. He is 42, with a white pocket square folded into his breast pocket, polished shoes, and 19 years at the FBI behind him, working organized crime, fraud, and counterintelligence. The job is new: chief of the counterterrorism section for the whole country.

The phone rings.

He picks up. On the other end is Richard Clarke, the counterterrorism chief at the National Security Council in the White House, who dialed the number without much hope, betting that someone would pick up even on a Sunday.

“Who’s this?”

“Well, who the hell are you? I’m John O’Neill.”

Clarke doesn’t argue. Ramzi Yousef, the man who blew up a van beneath the World Trade Center in February 1993 and killed 6 people, has just been tracked to Pakistan.

O’Neill hangs up, dials another number, then another. For days he never leaves the office, pulling together a team of agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration and diplomats from the State Department. On February 7, 1995, Ramzi Yousef is arrested in Pakistan as he tries to slip into Afghanistan.

That night, O’Neill opens the Yousef file and reads it page by page, until the hallway goes dark. What Yousef had in mind fits on a few sheets of paper: 12 airliners blown out of the sky over the Pacific in 48 hours.

Among the papers are phone numbers. One goes to the CIA to be run down, and the card comes back with three words on it: Islamic extremist financier.

And a name. O’Neill takes an empty manila folder, uncaps his pen, and writes it on the tab.

Osama bin Laden.

Khobar

Seventeen months later, in June 1996, in Khobar, Saudi Arabia.

A bomb has ripped open the face of a building that houses American troops. 19 soldiers are dead. John O’Neill steps off the plane with Louis Freeh, the director of the FBI.

For a year and a half now, anything that touches the name bin Laden, a wire transfer, an address, a man in custody, has landed sooner or later on his desk in Washington.

A Saudi police office. Tea steaming in glasses rimmed with gold, and a general in uniform smiling behind his desk. Arrests have been made, he says.

“I want their names.”

“You’ll get them.”

The next day, same office, same tea, same smile. O’Neill hasn’t touched his glass.

“The names.”

“They’re coming.”

Out in the hallway, he grabs Freeh by the arm.

“They’re not going to give us anything. Go back in there, and don’t come out of that room without the names.”

Freeh glances at his watch, then at the general waiting for them in the doorway.

“They’re our allies, John. We don’t force their hand.”

O’Neill lets go of his arm and flies home to Washington, jaw clenched, without one more name.

A Room in Chicago

Chicago, June 1997.

A packed conference room. Dark suits, legal pads open on laps, a microphone that squeals as O’Neill steps up to the podium. Since January he has run counterterrorism for the New York office, 350 agents, and the National Strategy Forum has invited him to speak.

Both hands rest on the lectern. His subject: the men who fought the Soviets in Afghanistan in the 1980s, and then went home.

“They were trained in terrorist activity, and now they are back in their various countries around the world with the training and having the network capabilities to know other jihad players around the world who have the same like mind, the same fundamentalist thinking and the same type of training.”

Pens stop moving.

“Almost all of the groups today, if they chose to, have the ability to strike us here in the United States.”

The room goes quiet.

“Unfortunately, I cannot predict that no Americans will be injured or killed as a result of a terrorist attack.”

Four Walls

New York, August 7, 1998, at FBI offices.

On a television set, the same footage runs over and over. Two truck bombs have gone off almost in the same minute outside the American embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. 224 dead.

O’Neill doesn’t wait for a report. He walks down the hall to the office of Lewis Schiliro, who runs the New York office, and goes in without knocking.

“Lewis, I know who’s behind this. It’s bin Laden.”

Schiliro looks up.

“Two trucks, two cities, same minute. Nobody else on earth can pull that off. I want the case, and I’m going to Nairobi.”

An attack on an embassy normally goes to the Washington field office. Schiliro calls headquarters.

That day the FBI’s number two is on vacation, unreachable by phone. Thomas Pickard, head of the Criminal Division, makes the call instead.

“Embassies belong to Washington. Always have.”

A few weeks go by. Evidence comes back from Africa, and it points to bin Laden. Headquarters reverses course: the case goes to New York, to O’Neill’s teams.

He asks for a plane ticket to Nairobi. Headquarters calls back with its answer.

“Your agents go. You stay in New York.”

His agents fly out without him. At headquarters, they call O’Neill too flashy, too sure of himself, a cowboy, and the word goes around the halls in Washington.

So the framed pictures come down off his office walls, sheets of paper go up in their place, and within days all four walls are covered.

Names connected by arrows. Phone numbers. Photos of suspects, everything his agents read to him over the phone from Africa, night after night.

The Trunk

In December 1999, in New York, a warning comes in: an attack is being planned for the turn of the millennium, and this time the intelligence points to American soil. O’Neill calls his 350 agents together in the big room at the office.

“Nobody goes home for Christmas. Nobody.”

A room without windows. Agents in headphones listen live to the tapped lines, day and night, scribbling on legal pads. Attorney General Janet Reno has approved the wiretaps by word of mouth, without waiting for the paperwork.

O’Neill moves from one station to the next, a cup of cold coffee in his hand, and leans over the pads.

“What’ve we got?”

“Nothing new. They’re talking about a cousin coming in.”

350 people, and he could use twice that many.

December 14, Port Angeles, near the Canadian border. A rental car rolls off the ferry, and a customs officer raps on the trunk.

“Pop it.”

Inside are about 130 pounds of explosives and a set of timers. The driver was on his way to Los Angeles International Airport.

Ahmed Ressam, 32, Algerian. The year before, he spent months training in Afghan camps tied to bin Laden’s network.

New Year’s 2000 comes and goes without a single blast.

The Briefcase

In the summer of 2001, in New York, the warnings from before the millennium are back, just as loud. They reach headquarters in Washington and never make it back down to O’Neill. Whatever he hears about them comes from friends on the phone at night.

Louis Freeh resigned in June. Thomas Pickard, the man who kept the embassy case from him, is running the FBI as acting director.

On Sunday, August 19, O’Neill opens The New York Times and finds his own name. An internal investigation has had him in its sights for a year, the article reveals, over a lost briefcase.

The incident goes back to the year before. July 2000, a hotel in Florida, a mandatory retirement planning seminar, 150 agents in one room. His phone rings. He steps into the hallway to get a signal, and when he comes back, the briefcase is no longer on his chair. The police find it an hour later.

A Montblanc pen and a lighter are gone, and the fingerprint work shows that nobody opened the report inside, which lays out every counterterrorism program in New York.

The Justice Department cleared O’Neill. But the internal case stayed open, tucked in a drawer at headquarters, in a building full of people who call him the cowboy, and someone has just leaked it to the paper.

O’Neill calls Pickard in Washington.

“You gave this to the Times.”

“It wasn’t me, John.”

He hangs up.

On Wednesday, August 22, after 25 years with the FBI, he turns in his badge and his gun and walks out $300,000 in debt, the cost of years of dinners and rounds of drinks he paid for out of his own pocket for police officers from all over the world passing through New York.

The office phone rings. It’s Jerry Hauer, a friend, the former head of New York City’s Office of Emergency Management, who now runs Kroll, a private security firm.

“How you doing?”

“Good timing. I’m packing up my stuff.”

“I heard. That’s why I’m calling. I’ve got a job for you.”

“What kind of job?”

“Security at the World Trade Center.”

Silence on the line, one breath, then another.

“I’ll take it.”

Paris, Monday, April 15, 2019, 6:18 p.m.

A small room with pale green walls, in the presbytery next to the cathedral. One man, alone, in front of a monitoring screen. The air smells of warm plastic from the screens.

A red light comes on: Fire.

The man has been here since seven thirty in the morning; his relief hasn't shown up. Ten hours into his shift. Three days of work this month, and he has never once walked the whole building.

The security company has cut back its team: there used to be two men in this room, one for the screen, one for the rounds. Now there is only him.

On the screen, under the word Fire, a zone: attic nave sacristy. Then a code, ZDA 110 3 15 1, the number of one of the building's 160 smoke detectors. He reads the line again: the code means nothing to him.

He radios a guard posted near the altar. In the nave, evening Mass has drawn several hundred worshippers: the canon is reading the Gospel, the organ has just gone quiet.

The message crackles over the walkie-talkies. Only the first words get through: attic nave sacristy.

At 6:23 p.m., a siren blares from the loudspeakers in the middle of the reading, followed by an evacuation announcement. The worshippers rise, and the nave empties onto the square without a single shout.

Meanwhile, the guard goes up to check the sacristy, the building attached to the south flank of the cathedral. Door open, a quick sweep of the rooms: no smoke, no flames, nothing. He calls it in.

6:35 p.m. False alarm, they conclude. The alarm is switched off, the worshippers return to their chairs, the service picks up where it left off.

Above their heads, the roof frame is already burning: 1,300 oak trees felled in the twelfth century, more than 330 feet of timber in one unbroken run, without a single firewall.

6:43 p.m. A phone rings at the control post: the head of the security company finally explains the code.

"It wasn't the sacristy attic you needed to check. It was the attic over the nave."

For twenty-five minutes, everyone has been looking for the fire in the wrong building.

The guard takes off running, the cathedral's site manager with him. Five minutes of climbing, and when they push open the attic door, flames several yards high are already running from beam to beam. The heat stops them at the threshold. A fire extinguisher would be useless.

6:48 p.m. The Paris fire brigade is called. Thirty minutes have passed since the first red light.

Two Little Hoses

At the same moment, across Paris, at the headquarters of the Paris Fire Brigade.

General Jean-Claude Gallet, 54, the head of the brigade, hears about the fire in a call from the mayor's office. The mayor is on her way to the square in front of Notre-Dame; she would like a briefing.

"We haven't heard anything."

His deputy's phone rings while they are looking at each other. General Jean-Marie Gontier picks up.

"Apparently, Notre-Dame is on fire."

They leave without discussing it, each to his own role: Gontier takes command at the foot of the fire, Gallet handles the decisions and the officials.

Along the Seine, thousands of people hold up their phones. At 6:52 p.m., one of the first tweets goes out, "I think Notre Dame is burning," and the world arrives faster than the fire trucks.

General Gontier steps out of his car. He lifts his head toward the spire, in flames from top to bottom. Three seconds, then he turns away.

Seen from the square, the whole shape of the cathedral is plain at a glance: the two square towers of the facade in front, the long roof of the nave behind them, and under that roof the attic, where the frame is burning. Halfway up, a stone gallery links the two towers.

Inside those towers, firefighters are already climbing the spiral stairs toward the fire. Shoulders against both walls, air tank scraping the stone, torso turned sideways to pass the man coming down: two feet wide, 300 steps, 45 pounds on their backs.

Among them, a 39-year-old staff sergeant, Rémi Lemaire, is climbing the south tower. From the window where he leans, the other tower is at eye level, with the gallery running between the two across the void. He looks at it for a long time.

At the top, level with the roof, a 27-year-old corporal pushes open the door to the ledge. In front of her, everything is burning, and in the time it takes her to get her line into position, the fire has gained a hundred feet. She falls back, sets up again farther on, falls back again.

"We look ridiculous, with our two little hoses."

Behind her, the man holding the line watches the flames all lean the same way.

"The wind is turning. It's heading for the north tower."

The fire begins to flank them. They pull back into the attic, where the air is so hot she has to put on her mask and breathe from her tank.

At 7:15 p.m., General Gallet sets up a hundred yards from the square, facing the cathedral. In less than an hour, the fire has taken two thirds of the roof. Three priorities, in that order: the people, the artworks, the cathedral.

Fifteen minutes later, he warns the mayor and the rector: the artworks must come out.

The Fireball

About twenty minutes later.

On every major channel in the world, regular programming stops. CNN, the BBC, television networks across Europe and Asia are broadcasting the same live image: Notre-Dame in flames in the middle of Paris.

The fire now engulfs the entire spire: 300 feet of wood and lead, designed by Viollet-le-Duc in 1859. The lead melts and runs down the slates. The spire leans, breaks, falls onto the roof and punches through the vault.

From the square, the spire is hidden by the trees and the towers. What carries is the sound of the crowd.

In the attic, the crash runs the length of the frame. The blast slams every door in the cathedral at once.

A ball of fire sweeps through the attic. Some men are behind a wall. The wall saves them.

At the command post, contact is lost with the men inside. General Gallet is already counting his dead. Ten seconds, then the radio crackles.

"We're good. Everyone's accounted for."

The fire is inside now. Lead is running into the nave; a second fire has started on the floor. The crossing of the transept, which anchors the flying buttresses, has come down.

General withdrawal from the upper levels. The lines on the ground pump water into a nave where the drops evaporate before they touch the floor.

Between the sacristy and the trucks sent by the city, a human chain of firefighters, police officers, and curators passes the artworks from hand to hand under the falling embers.

Two relics never leave the curators' arms, held tight the way you hold a small child: the Crown of Thorns, which tradition says was set on the head of Christ, and the tunic of Saint Louis, king of France, seven centuries old.

House of Cards

At 9:07 p.m., an hour after the spire fell, a glow appears behind a window of the north tower, halfway up the facade. It grows by the minute.

Under the command post tent, the monuments expert, a lieutenant colonel on assignment to the Ministry of Culture, lays a drone photograph on the table in front of Generals Gallet and Gontier.

"The tower is stone. But inside it, there is a wooden structure as tall as an eight-story building, built to carry the bells. It's called the belfry."

His finger taps the photograph.

"Eight bells hang inside it: almost seventeen tons of bronze. If the wood burns and gives way, they fall down through the tower. Not like bells. Like wrecking balls."

"The north tower goes, it takes the south tower with it, and together they bring down the cathedral. A house of cards."

General Gontier repeats the same sentence twice, to no one.

"We must save Notre-Dame."

Two More Hoses

A few minutes later, under the same tent.

Staff Sergeant Rémi Lemaire, back from the south tower, waits for a gap in the radio traffic.

When it comes, he proposes a route to General Gontier: go up the south tower, which isn't on fire, with two hoses connected straight to a fire engine. Cross the gallery that links the two towers. Enter the north tower from there, and attack the belfry from inside.

He says it twice, the second time more slowly, tracing the route with two fingers on the table.

General Gontier listens. He commands from the square, but he has gone up several times during the evening to see the fire up close, and his gear is still smoking: he knows how narrow those stairways are, how hot it is up there.

He approves the route. The decision to send men in under the bells is made just across the square, at police headquarters, where General Gallet is expected.

Save or Perish

Twenty or so officials in a room. The French president, Emmanuel Macron, is there.

Prime Minister Édouard Philippe turns his thumbs in slow circles. The rector of the cathedral is crying. The police prefect waits.

General Gallet walks in wearing his fire gear, dripping. He lays diagrams and drone photographs on the table, and he begins with what he is giving up: the roof frame is lost, he lets it burn; everything he has goes to the towers.

"Mr. President, the fire has entered the north belfry. The whole structure could collapse. We have to try to get inside."

"The operation is risky, and if it comes down, everyone could die in there. But it is the only way."

Three months earlier, in January, a gas explosion on Rue de Trévise took two of his men.

"I've already lost two men on operations this year, and our motto is Save or Perish. I'm going to send men in again. It puts them at risk, but I have to do it."

"In twenty minutes, I'll know whether we've lost her."

"How would you rate the risk of collapse?" asks the police prefect.

"High. But if we do nothing, the entire cathedral comes down."

"If we want to save the cathedral, we have no other choice."

Many stare at their shoes. President Emmanuel Macron says nothing. He looks hard at General Gallet, then nods.

General Gallet walks out and finds his deputy on the square.

"It's a go. Send them in."

General Gontier has the radio in one hand. He does not answer right away.

Outside the Tent

General Gontier gathers his officers.

"We go up the south tower, we cross the gallery, we enter the north tower and we climb to the level of the bells. The floor is burning in there, and the structure can give way."

A pause.

"Who's going?"

The question hangs in the air. No one moves.

Helmets under arms, soot lines from their masks across their cheeks, gear steaming in the cold air. Eyes drop to gloves, to boots, to the ground.

Behind them, the lines are still pouring water, the radio talks to itself, and along the Seine, hundreds of voices are praying in song.

One of them answers. He commands a crew from a suburban town. He does not raise his voice; he explains nothing.

"We're not going in."

General Gontier does not flinch. His gaze moves from face to face, and he asks the question again, in almost the same words.

Behind the windows of the north tower, the glow is growing.

A voice, somewhere in the group.

"I'll go."

Paris, July 12, 1789.

A crowd comes down the Boulevard du Temple shouting a name. Canvas aprons, wool jackets, sticks wrenched from market stalls. Shopkeepers close their shutters as it passes.

“Necker! Necker!”

Jacques Necker is finance minister to King Louis XVI, and the only man in the government the people trust. The king dismissed him yesterday.

A man shouts from the front of the crowd.

“The king’s troops are coming into Paris!”

The crowd stops at number 20 and hammers on the door. Behind the shop window, a row of life size wax heads looks out into the street, and a bust of Necker stands in the middle of them. It is the only likeness of him in Paris.

“The bust! Give us the bust!”

The door opens. Philippe Curtius, the wax modeler who owns the shop, comes out in his shirtsleeves, lifts the bust out of the window and puts it into the arms of the nearest man.

The bust goes up above their heads, in triumph, and the crowd moves off west.

In the Place Louis XV, a line of cavalry blocks the street. Sabers come out. The riders drive their horses into the crowd.

The man carrying Necker goes down. He does not get up.

The bust rolls across the paving stones, the face laid open by saber cuts.

The Powder

On the morning of July 14, the crowd breaks into the Invalides, the old soldiers’ hospital, and comes out with thousands of muskets.

The muskets are empty. The powder sits in the Bastille, at the other end of the city.

In front of the Bastille, the guns fire down the street. Men on ladders start pulling down the top of the walls. The fortress surrenders in the afternoon.

Launay, the governor of the Bastille, is dragged to the Hôtel de Ville, the city hall. Flesselles, who runs the city government, is brought in behind him. Both men are killed there, and their heads are cut off.

The heads go up on pikes and move off through Paris. In the middle of one procession, a young woman is elbowing her way forward.

Marie Grosholtz, 27, smaller than the men around her. Curtius took her in as a child, and she now has the best hand in the workshop.

In Alsace, where the name is from, Grosholtz men have been executioners from father to son for three hundred years.

She slips through, pushes one arm aside, then another, reaches the front. The city guard appears at the end of the street. The men carrying the pikes scatter.

She goes back to the Boulevard du Temple with both heads held against her apron.

She lays them cheek down on the workshop table. Oil with a brush, over the skin, then liquid plaster from forehead to chin.

The plaster hardens. She works it loose at the edge. The hollow holds everything.

Hot wax tinted the color of skin runs into it. It cools, it comes away, it carries the face.

Glass eyes go in from behind. The hair goes in one strand at a time, with a needle.

The Rope

The next morning, Marie sets the two new faces in the shop window.

A line forms on the sidewalk before the shops open. People push to get to the glass.

They have come to see two men the papers have been full of for months, men they hate and have never once seen. No newspaper prints a portrait.

The window costs nothing.

Beside it the shop door stands open. A man stands there all day, calling out over the line.

“Come in, gentlemen! Come and see the royal table! It’s just like Versailles!”

Admission is 2 sous, and a second line forms at that door.

Curtius has turned the back of the house into a large room. The figures stand there in full dress, life size, behind a rope strung across the room.

The king and queen sit at a table laid for dinner, the dauphin, their son, beside them, and farther back Lafayette, Voltaire, Rousseau and Franklin, with du Barry, mistress of Louis XV, asleep on a cushion.

For 12 sous, you step past the rope and walk among them.

The months pass and executions multiply in Paris. Every week another head falls, and the whole city repeats the name.

In the morning the new face is behind the glass and the line is in front of it. In the evening it goes into the large room and takes its place among the others.

Curtius no longer touches the plaster. He works the door and the cash box, and he takes the orders.

Every face that leaves the shop now comes from Marie’s hands. She molds, she pours, she sets the hair.

The Will

In the summer of 1794, Curtius leaves the Boulevard du Temple for his house in Ivry sur Seine. He does not come back to the shop.

Marie runs the door, the room and the workshop.

On August 31 he sends for a notary, and for Marie. He dictates his will in her presence. The house, the figures, the molds, all of it is hers.

“You have been under my roof for twenty years.”

On September 23, three weeks after the notary comes, Curtius dies in the house at Ivry.

Marie is 32. She inherits 28 standing figures, 10 busts, 68 other models, more than 60 paintings and an Egyptian mummy.

The Gambling Tables

In October 1795 she marries François Tussaud, the son of a family of winegrowers from Mâcon. He is younger than she is.

A daughter is born in 1796. She dies at nine months old.

Joseph is born in 1798, Francis in 1800.

Marie Tussaud works the molds in the morning. She feeds the children between coats of plaster. In the evening she takes the money at the door.

Her husband comes down at closing time, lifts the cash box off her lap and walks out with it.

He comes home in the morning from the gambling tables with empty pockets, and signs another note.

The creditors come to the shop with the papers he has signed. They take away one figure, then two.

Seven years, and nothing remains of what Curtius left her.

Nothing but the molds.

The Quay

At the end of 1802, a showman pushes open the shop door. In London he puts on ghost shows, figures thrown onto a sheet.

He offers to take her across with her figures. He will pay for the crossing, and for the posters that will advertise the show.

In return, he takes half of everything she earns in England.

She signs.

The crates go aboard. Inside them, packed in straw, the plaster molds.

She is 41. She has no money left.

Joseph, 4, is already on deck. Francis, 2, stays on the quay, his hand in his grandmother’s.

She crouches down to his level.

“I’ll only be gone a few months.”

Everyone knows Cleopatra. Queen of Egypt, the greatest beauty of the ancient world, the woman who brought down Julius Caesar and then Mark Antony with nothing but her face.

Two thousand years later, we still picture her as Elizabeth Taylor. Smoky eyes, black bangs, gold at the wrists.

None of it is true.

That face was manufactured after her death, by a man who needed her to be beautiful so he could destroy her.

The story starts three centuries earlier, and not in Egypt.

The Stolen Body

Fall of 332 BC. A 24-year-old boy crosses into Egypt at the head of an army, and not a single arrow is fired.

His name is Alexander. King of Macedon, a mountain kingdom north of Greece, he left home two years earlier to tear the largest empire in the known world away from the Persians. The Persians have occupied Egypt for eleven years, and the Egyptians hate them for it. The gates open for him.

He stays six months.

Long enough to be crowned pharaoh, to travel five days by camel across the desert to have his fortune told by an oracle, and to drive stakes into a strip of sand wedged between the sea and a lake, west of the Nile delta. The city doesn't exist yet. He gives it his name.

Then he heads east again. In June of 323 BC, in Babylon, a fever kills him at 32, with no heir fit to rule.

His generals carve up the empire the following month. Macedonians, childhood friends, former bodyguards. Each man takes his share.

One of them claims Egypt. Ptolemy, in his forties, raised alongside Alexander, at his side on every battlefield since day one.

Two years pass before the body leaves Babylon. A funeral carriage pulled by sixty-four mules carries it toward Macedon, where kings are buried.

Ptolemy intercepts it in Syria with his troops and diverts the convoy to Egypt.

An army is sent to take it back. It never makes it across the Nile.

Alexander's body comes to rest in a mausoleum in the center of Alexandria. People file past it for centuries.

Ptolemy has himself crowned king. A Greek officer, in a country that isn't his, with the corpse of the greatest conqueror in the world resting in his capital.

A Greek Family

Ptolemy's kingdom will last nearly three centuries without ever ceasing to be Greek.

In Alexandria, the court speaks Greek, the administration writes in Greek, legal rulings come down in Greek. The city builds a theater, a gymnasium, a library where scribes churn out copies of Homer, and a lighthouse over three hundred feet tall that the ancient world counts among the Seven Wonders.

Egyptians have no place in any of it. They work the land along the Nile and pay their taxes.

The Ptolemies rule over them without mixing with them. To keep the bloodline intact, they marry their sisters, then their nieces, generation after generation. The coins tell the story of these marriages: the same profile turns up portrait after portrait.

They hold the title of pharaoh. They have themselves carved into temple walls in Egyptian dress, the double crown on their heads. A uniform for the job. Not one of them learns the language of the country.

Cleopatra is born in Alexandria in 69 BC, tenth generation. Her father is named Ptolemy, like every man before him. Her native language is Greek.

History didn't even record her mother's name. Or her paternal grandmother's. Half of her ancestry is missing from the record, and the other half, the half we can trace name by name, is Macedonian, start to finish.

The Language of the Land

Cleopatra takes the throne at 18, in 51 BC.

And she learns Egyptian.

Nine generations of Greek kings settled along the Nile, and not one of them had ever spoken the language of the land they ruled.

Egyptian isn't the only language she learns. From one audience to the next, she slides from Ethiopian to Hebrew, from Arabic to Parthian, never once calling for an interpreter.

She also has herself depicted as an Egyptian.

Roughly three hundred miles south of Alexandria, on a wall of the temple at Dendera, she has herself carved into stone in Egyptian dress, in the style Nile sculptors have practiced for two thousand years. Beside her, the son she had with Julius Caesar.

In the papyri, she signs herself the New Isis, after the country's greatest goddess.

A Greek queen learning to pass herself off as Egyptian. It's a political calculation, and it works. Egypt embraces her as it never embraced a single Ptolemy before her.

The Face on the Silver

In the spring of 36 BC, Cleopatra is 33 years old and some six hundred miles from Alexandria. Antioch, a city in Syria set on a river, the Orontes, with a mountain at its back.

Mark Antony, a Roman general, is headquartered there. A division of power among Rome's strongmen gave him the East, and for four years now he has governed everything stretching from Greece to the Euphrates.

She has spent the winter at his side. They already have two children, twins born four years earlier.

That year, the city's mint strikes a silver coin bearing both their faces. Mark Antony on one side. She on the other, the same size.

Rome doesn't put foreign rulers on its silver. And yet, around Cleopatra's head, in Greek letters, her full name and title: Queen Cleopatra, the Young Goddess.

Her profile is what catches the eye.

The nose, long and sharply hooked, runs straight down from the forehead in a single line. The chin juts forward. The jaw cuts across the lower face. The neck is thick, the forehead low.

It's the Ptolemy nose. The one that belonged to her father, her grandfather, every king in the family for the past two hundred and seventy years.

A coin is the only object that shows a ruler to people who will never lay eyes on him. It passes from hand to hand, city to city, for years. No coin goes into production until the king has seen it.

Cleopatra approved this profile, then let it travel across the entire East.

A king who commissions his own portrait commissions one that flatters him. Engravers know how to soften a nose, pull back a chin, narrow a jaw.

Nobody touched hers.

Cleopatra's beauty was never something Cleopatra chose.

"The most beautiful woman of the ancient world" was shaped by a man who wished her nothing but harm.

Serpukhov 15, on the night of September 25 to 26, 1983.

A bunker buried under the pines, 70 kilometers southwest of Moscow, on no map.

Stanislav Petrov walks down the concrete stairs, pushes open the door to the watch room, and sits down in the commander's chair.

It's cool inside. The air smells of stale tobacco from the shifts before his.

In front of him, three tiered rows of consoles, an operator behind each one, heads bent under their lamps. The back wall holds a lit up display board as wide as a building front. Tonight, the board stays dark.

Petrov is 44. A lieutenant colonel and an engineer trained at the Kiev military aviation academy, he has worked on this satellite network since it began.

The watch is his, twelve hours straight. A lieutenant brings up a glass of tea and sets it on the console, to the right of the logbook.

Petrov opens the logbook to today's date and uncaps his pen. The war journal. Everything that happens on a watch gets written here, hour by hour.

High above the Earth, Soviet satellites watch American missile bases. Whatever they see arrives here, on this wall.

11 p.m. The tea goes cold. Below him, an operator spins a pencil between his fingers. Another coughs, steps out for a cigarette, comes back.

Petrov writes a line in the logbook. Nothing to report.

Twelve fourteen a.m. The alarm goes off. His hand drops the pen.

On the console, a red button starts pulsing. One word on it. LAUNCH.

Petrov looks up. The back wall repeats the word in capital letters, and a second line lights up beneath it. HIGH RELIABILITY.

A chair scrapes against the concrete. For 15 seconds, no one speaks.

The Boeing

The operator in the front row half rises, one hand on the back of his chair.

“Commander, is it a plane?”

Three weeks earlier, a Korean airliner had drifted over Sakhalin, a Soviet island facing Japan. Ground defense had taken it for an American spy plane and given the order to fire. A fighter shot it down in flight. 269 dead.

“The board doesn't light up for a plane anymore,” Petrov says. “Sit down.” The operator sits back down.

“We have to report it.”

“Not yet.”

In March, in front of the cameras, the American president had called the Soviet Union the evil empire. Since then, both sides have kept each other in their sights.

On the board, a second light comes on. Then a third. The top line changes. MISSILE ATTACK.

A fourth. A fifth. Under each light, the machine repeats its reliability rating.

Petrov picks up the phone. “Get me ground radar.”

Three Rings

Ground radar sits in another building, kilometers from here. Petrov counts three rings.

“What do you see?”

A silence. Voices in the background, the rustle of paper. “Nothing.”

“Five launches, on our end.”

“We have nothing.”

“I'll stay on the line.” “Understood.”

A radar looks up from the ground, and the Earth is round. As long as a missile is far off, it stays below the horizon.

Petrov wedges the receiver against his ear. Those men need a few more minutes, the time it takes a missile to climb above the curve of the Earth.

Moscow Is On Alert

The intercom crackles above the console. The transmission room, two corridors away, where messages leave the bunker for Moscow.

Petrov takes it with his free hand. “Commander. Moscow has the alert.”

“I didn't send anything.”

“It went up on its own. We're waiting on your assessment.”

His tongue sticks to the roof of his mouth. His right arm is shaking, he braces it against the armrest.

In Ukraine, in the Urals, in Siberia, missiles wait in their silos, warheads bolted on.

An intercontinental missile takes about 30 minutes to travel from an American base to Moscow. Five minutes have just gone by.

Petrov calls the general staff.

Rome, March 28, 193. Late afternoon.

The imperial guard's camp closes off the northeast corner of the city.

A wall three men high, a walkway running along the top, square towers at the corners.

Behind it, several thousand soldiers. They are called the Praetorians.

They are the only men in Rome who carry weapons, and the emperor sleeps under their guard.

They killed him this morning.

The gates of the camp have stayed barred ever since.

Down below, in the dust, a 60-year-old man tips his head back to see the top of the wall. His hands cupped around his mouth.

“Fifteen thousand a man!”

The shout climbs the stone and fades.

Up top, a Praetorian steps onto the walkway, leans on his elbows, waits. Does not answer. Turns back toward the inside of the camp and calls the number down into the courtyard.

“Fifteen thousand!”

A voice comes back up from the courtyard, muffled by the thickness of the wall.

The Praetorian listens, then leans out over the drop.

“In here they're offering sixteen.”

“Seventeen thousand!”

He leaves, comes back, and another number drops from the top of the rampart.

What is being sold behind this wall is the Roman Empire.

The Man Below

The man pacing at the foot of the rampart is Marcus Didius Julianus. One of the richest men in Rome.

Consul 18 years ago, governor of four provinces, then of Africa.

Since then, nothing. No post, no assignment, ten years of opening his house to men who no longer want anything from him.

He pulls a fold of his toga back over his forearm. Twenty paces one way, twenty the other, head down.

At his back, the stone throws the day's heat back at him.

“Twenty thousand sesterces!”

The Praetorian heads back toward the courtyard. The wait stretches, and Julianus stops mid-stride.

Up top, six or seven of them are leaning out over the drop, watching him mark time in the dust.

When the head reappears between two battlements, no number comes back down.

Down below, Julianus cups his hands again.

“Who is the man bidding against me?”

The Praetorian takes his time.

“Flavius Sulpicianus. Prefect of the city.”

The prefect of the city keeps order in Rome and commands the city cohorts. The second highest office in the empire.

The emperor had sent him to the camp to calm things down. The gates locked behind him, and he has not come back out.

Since then he has been bidding from up on a platform, in the middle of the courtyard.

Julianus stops moving. His eyes travel up the wall, from the ground to the parapet, and the silence holds.

Then he shouts.

“That man married his daughter to the one you killed this morning!”

Nothing moves on the walkway.

“The day he is emperor, he will look for his son-in-law's murderers. And he will know where to find you.”

Up top, heads draw together. A discussion above him, and not one word of it comes down.

A ladder slides down the wall and bangs into the dust at his feet.

He climbs the rungs, toga askew, short of breath, and two pairs of arms catch him at the top and haul him over the parapet.

On the other side, the courtyard opens below. Thousands of faces turned up toward him.

Standing above them, he raises his hand and spreads his five fingers wide, so they can be counted from the back of the courtyard.

“Twenty-five thousand sesterces!”

Arms go up the whole length of the walkway, and the courtyard takes it up below.

“Long live the emperor!”

They walk him down between two rows of men. In the middle of the courtyard, a spear planted in the ground.

He walks past it without slowing.

On the end of the spear, the head of his predecessor.

The Spear in the Courtyard

That head belongs to Publius Helvius Pertinax. 66 years old, son of a man of no family, who climbed to the top of the Roman state over forty years in the army and the provinces.

Eighty-seven days of rule, and the ambition to put the empire back on its feet.

Under him, the pits where the previous reign had thrown its condemned men were opened again, and families finally carried their dead to a tomb.

Before the Senate, he swore that no senator would die while he reigned.

To his wife he refused the title of empress, to his son the title of heir.

From the Praetorians, he took away the right to plunder Rome.

A coin lifted off a stall, a door they went through without anyone opening it for them: for twelve years they had helped themselves without being asked to account for it.

Overnight, they had to pay for what they took.

At first light, two hundred of them climbed the palace stairs, swords in hand.

The doorkeepers let them in. The servants stepped aside in the hallways. Not one door was shut in their faces.

One man struck first, and the rest followed.

They came back down with the head, returned to the camp, and barred the gates behind them.

Pertinax's Dinner

Julianus reaches the palace late that night. In the hallway leading to the dining room, the body of Pertinax is still waiting.

He steps over it.

The lamps have been burning since morning and the oil smells burnt. On the table, the meal prepared for Pertinax at dawn.

Julianus settles in, pulls a lamp toward him, and looks at the dead man's dinner.

Lentils, cabbage, half a cold chicken.

The old man served his guests the cheapest food in Rome, and the great houses laughed about it behind his back.

Julianus laughs and orders the table cleared.

Servants go out into the streets. Merchants get up in the middle of the night, and every expensive thing in Rome makes its way to the palace.

A famous dancer arrives. The meal starts over, the dice come out, and the dice cups keep knocking on the wood for part of the night.

Toward the end, the palace steward leans in toward him.

“The Praetorians are asking when they will get their twenty-five thousand sesterces.”

Cup in hand, Julianus stands and walks the length of the table without answering.

The guests fall silent one after another, and soon nothing is left but the sound of the dice cups.

Twenty-five thousand sesterces, eight years of pay for every man in the camp, and there are several thousand of them.

No private fortune in Rome covers a sum like that. Not his either.

He stops behind the steward.

“At first light. You will take me to the treasury.”

Under the Palace

Day breaks over several thousand Praetorians massed in front of the palace.

The steward goes down first, a lamp in his hand. A hallway, a staircase, a door unlocked, and the air turns cold all at once.

A vaulted room where the light does not reach the corners. Along the walls, chests bound with iron, set on stone bases.

This is where the empire's money sleeps. What the provinces pay in, what pays the legions on the frontiers.

The lids come up, one after another.

They are empty.
